A fat quarter is a quarter yard cut differently than a regular quarter of material. A fat quarter measures 18 inches by 22 inches, nearly forming a square of fabric. To create a fat quarter, cut a half-yard of fabric 18 inches along its lengthwise grain, then cut that piece in half at its midpoint.

What is 100% Cotton?
Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll, or protective case, around the seeds of the cotton plants of the genus Gossypium in the mallow family Malvaceae. The fiber is almost pure cellulose and can contain minor percentages of waxes, fats, pectins, and water. Under natural conditions, the cotton bolls will increase the dispersal of the seeds.
100% cotton fabric means the material is produced entirely out of cotton fibers. These cotton fibers are spun into yarn and then typically tightly woven to create the fabric. This provides cotton with its strength, softness, and durability.
Why use 100% cotton when sewing?
First, it is easy to work with, and second, cotton likes to stick to itself which is helpful when you are basting or doing other sewing activities. Third, cotton presses well, and fourth it breathes well. In addition to all of that, you will find 100% quilting cotton just about anywhere.
